A rename is not what Google shipped.
On September 30, 2026, Google announced skills for the Gemini app and Google Workspace: reusable custom instructions you invoke in chat, stack in one prompt, and author on an open Markdown-native SKILL.md standard. Gems are not getting a fresh coat of paint. They are moving to Settings on a dated fence, then ending on separate clocks for personal, business and enterprise, and education. Skills do not sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps. If you need the same instruction pack on both surfaces, you create it twice (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026; Google consumer blog, Deven Tokuno, September 30, 2026).
This is a primary-source review, not a hands-on bakeoff. The job is to map what skills are, what changed versus Gems, what works on paper, what breaks or stays dual-homed, who gets which SKU, and what marketing, ops, and Workspace admins should do before Rapid Release lands.
What it is
Skills are reusable custom instructions for Gemini in the Gemini app and most Workspace apps. You create one, then run it by typing a forward slash and the skill name in the prompt bar. You can stack multiple skills in the same prompt or at different points in a conversation. Google’s Workspace Updates examples are blunt: a brand-voice skill next to a blog-draft skill, or a vendor-evaluator skill next to an executive-email drafter. Educators get the same stacking pattern for newsletter plus institutional brand guidelines (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026; Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
Unlike Gems, skills function inline in unified chat threads. A Gem was a separate assistant surface. A skill is an instruction pack you layer into the thread you already inhabit. Skills are built entirely on the open, Markdown-native SKILL.md standard, which Google says lets you copy skills created on other platforms into Gemini and Workspace (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
The consumer blog (Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App) adds product-facing detail for the app surface: skills are rolling out directly into Gemini chat globally for users 18 and older, with under-18 access “coming soon”; you can create skills that include reference files such as plain text, PDFs, or images; Gemini can help build custom skills from chats; sharing and Drive or Notebook file attachments are framed as arriving in the coming weeks as skills gain Gem-parity features (Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
The Verge (Stevie Bonifield, September 30) restates the replacement framing and the high-level calendar: skills available in Gemini chats starting that day, Workspace rollout from October 5, Gemini app rollout from October 13, Gems shutting down starting in November for individual users and as early as March 1, 2027 for Workspace users. Use The Verge as independent confirmation of shape and urgency, then return to Workspace Updates for admin-grade dates (The Verge, September 30, 2026).
What changed
Inline and stackable, not a sidekick picker. The architectural change is the point. Gems lived as named assistants. Skills live as slash-invoked instruction layers you can combine. Teams that mapped one Gem to one job will need a stacking model: brand plus channel plus legal, invoked together, not three separate chat personas (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
SKILL.md as the portable unit. Open Markdown-native skills mean your instruction pack can move across platforms that speak the same standard. That is a procurement and vendor-lock story as much as a UX story. Treat portability as a claim to verify when you import, not as proof every Gem feature already has a skill twin.
No sync between Gemini app and Workspace. Workspace Updates puts this in a note operators will miss if they only skim the consumer blog: “Currently, skills do not sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps. If you want to use a skill across both platforms, you must create it separately in each.” Auto-migration of remaining Gems produces draft skills in the Gemini app. Because those drafts will not automatically appear in Workspace, you still recreate for Workspace apps if you need them there (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
Workspace Studio already closed the “Ask a Gem” create path. You can no longer create Workspace Studio flows with the “Ask a Gem” step. Existing flows with Ask a Gem steps continue to work for now, then stop when Gems end on the business/enterprise or education clocks (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
Dated Gems wind-down, with personal and Workspace clocks that differ. Attribute carefully. Workspace Updates is the admin timeline. The consumer blog is the personal and Labs timeline. They are not the same sentence.

The dated fence (admin timeline first)
From Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026:
- October 5, 2026: Skills begin rolling out in Workspace, expected complete by mid-November. Rapid Release: October 5 to October 12. Scheduled Release: October 19 to mid-November.
- October 13, 2026: Skills begin rolling out in the Gemini app for Rapid and Scheduled Release domains, expected complete by mid-November.
- November 17, 2026: Gems move to the Settings panel of the Gemini app. Users can still create, edit, and use them.
- No sooner than March 1, 2027 (business and enterprise only): Gems can no longer be created, edited, or used; removed from Settings; Workspace Studio Ask a Gem flows stop; remaining Gems in the Gemini app auto-migrate to draft skills in the Gemini app.
- No sooner than June 1, 2027 (education only): same Gem end, plus removal from Google Classroom and third-party LMS surfaces supported by Gemini LTI; Ask a Gem flows stop; remaining Gems auto-migrate to draft skills in the Gemini app.
Google will share more auto-migration detail with admins at least 30 days in advance. “No sooner than” means earliest fence, not a guaranteed cutover day (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026). TrustList’s same-day admin summary restates that timetable and the dual-create sync warning for buyers who want a compressed checklist (TrustList, September 30, 2026).
From the consumer blog, attribute the personal path separately: Gems support removes starting in November for individuals with personal accounts; March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers; June 2027 for Workspace education customers. Opal, the mini-apps experiment, turns down at the same time in November. Gems by Google Labs also turn down and do not migrate into skills (Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
If your org mixes personal Gemini habits with Workspace seats, you now have three clocks on one whiteboard: personal November start, business and enterprise no-sooner-than March 1, 2027, education no-sooner-than June 1, 2027. Collapse those into one “Gems die in November” slide and you will mis-brief nonprofit, edu, and consumer-adjacent teams.
What works (on paper)
For teams already drowning in repeat prompts, slash-invoked skills are the cleaner unit. Stack brand, channel, and compliance in one shot instead of bouncing between Gem personas. Reference files on skills (text, PDF, image on the consumer blog’s “starting today” claim) tighten briefs that used to live in paste bins (Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
For platform-savvy builders, SKILL.md portability is the interesting bet. If your agency already maintains Markdown instruction packs elsewhere, Google is inviting a copy path rather than a proprietary Gem-only rewrite. Verify import behavior before you promise cross-platform parity to a client.
For Workspace admins, the dated post is unusually usable. Rapid versus Scheduled Release windows, Studio create-path closure, 30-day notice on auto-migration detail, and named SKU availability give you a real change-management calendar instead of a vibe (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
What breaks or stays fenced
Dual-surface recreation is mandatory for now. App skill does not equal Workspace skill. Migration drafts land in the Gemini app. Workspace still needs a second create if that is where Docs, Gmail, or other app surfaces need the instruction pack (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
Studio builders hit the wall on new Ask a Gem steps immediately. Existing flows limp until the Mar/Jun fences. New automation design must assume skills, not Gems, as the Gemini instruction unit.
Feature parity with Gems is incomplete at announcement. Sharing and Drive or Notebook attachments are framed as coming in the coming weeks on the consumer blog, not as day-one everywhere. Do not retire a Gem that depends on those behaviors until the skill twin actually has them (Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
Labs Gems do not migrate. Gems by Google Labs turn down without a skills landing pad. Inventory anything built there as a rewrite or a kill, not as an auto-migrate candidate (Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
Opal turns down in November. Mini-app experiments on that track need an exit plan on the personal November clock, separate from Workspace Gem end dates (Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
Age gate on Workspace skills. Workspace Updates says skills in Workspace are available only to users over age 18; skills in the Gemini app will be available to users of all ages (with the consumer blog noting U18 for the app “coming soon”). Education and mixed-age Workspace orgs need an explicit policy, not a shrug (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026; Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
Hands-on gap. This review does not claim a local skill-builder session. Dates and product shape come from Google primary posts plus The Verge and TrustList as secondary amplifiers. Until you recreate your top Gems as skills on both surfaces, treat stacking and import claims as vendor documentation.

Who it is for
Good fit this week: Workspace business and enterprise teams on Rapid Release who can start skills from October 5; marketing and brand ops with Gem libraries for voice, channel, and compliance; admins who need a dated migration calendar; builders who already think in Markdown instruction packs.
Poor fit this week: teams that only needed a cute Gem avatar and have no reusable instruction inventory; education orgs that can wait on Classroom and LTI guidance but must still plan the June 2027 fence; anyone assuming one create covers app and Workspace; Labs Gem owners expecting auto-migration.
Marketing consequence: stop briefing “Gems got renamed to Skills.” Brief “slash-invoked, stackable instruction packs on SKILL.md, dual-create across app and Workspace, Gems moving to Settings November 17, business and enterprise Gem end no sooner than March 1, 2027.” That sentence prevents three months of training debt.
Pricing and limits, operator-tight
Google did not publish a separate skills SKU price in these posts. Availability is the operator limit.
Skills in the Gemini app: available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts; consumer blog says available to all Google AI subscription tiers, currently 18+ with U18 coming soon (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026; Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
Skills in Workspace: Business Starter, Standard, and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; Google AI Pro for Education; AI Expanded Access. Workspace skills are 18+ only (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
No fake seat prices here. If your procurement packet needs dollars, pull them from your existing Gemini and Workspace contracts. Skills ride those entitlements on the named tiers above.
What to do this week
Inventory every Gem your marketing, brand, support, and ops teams actually use. Owner, surface (app vs Workspace vs Studio vs Classroom), files attached, share audience, and whether it is a Labs Gem.
Flag Rapid versus Scheduled Release for your domains. Rapid Workspace skills start October 5 (through October 12). Scheduled starts October 19. Gemini app skills start October 13 for both release tracks, completing mid-November (Google Workspace Updates, September 30, 2026).
Recreate the critical path as skills on both surfaces before you trust auto-migration. Remember: app drafts do not appear in Workspace automatically.
Stop designing new Workspace Studio flows around Ask a Gem. Rewrite the pattern for skills now.
Update training, SOPs, and agency briefs before November 17, when Gems move to Settings. People who cannot find Gems will open tickets that look like outages.
Separate personal, business and enterprise, and education clocks on the exec one-pager. Personal November start, business and enterprise no sooner than March 1, 2027, education no sooner than June 1, 2027. Labs Gems and Opal need their own November kill list (Google Workspace Updates; Google consumer blog, September 30, 2026).
Put a 30-day admin watch on auto-migration detail. Google promised at least thirty days’ notice before those specifics land. Do not assume March 1 is a soft rumor. It is the earliest business and enterprise fence in the Workspace Updates post.
The skill is not the Gem. One was a sidekick. The other is a stackable instruction unit with a dual-surface create tax and a calendar that punishes teams who wait for auto-migrate day. Inventory this week. Dual-create before Rapid Release teaches you the hard lessons while Gems still work.
