Bitly has the most recognizable URL shortener on the planet. Everyone has seen a bit.ly link. And until recently, Bitly had a branded subreddit with 38 members and a case of advanced indifference.
A dormant subreddit. Thirty-eight people. For a brand used by hundreds of millions.
Foundation Marketing, a B2B content agency out of Halifax, looked at that ghost town and saw something nobody else was pricing in: the machines were watching. So they rebuilt Bitly’s Reddit presence into a content engine, flipped the program’s KPI from referral traffic to AI citation share, and walked away with the number one citation share among link shorteners in AI answers: 11.7%, nearly double the next competitor, measured across 218 tracked prompts. (PR Newswire release, September 30, 2026)
The real story is not the Reddit glow-up. It is the KPI switch. The subreddit is not the funnel anymore. It is the raw material the funnel is made of.
What it is
On September 30, Foundation announced it joined Profound’s inaugural Agency Certification Cohort, one of 18 agencies certified in measuring and improving how brands show up across generative AI platforms. Every Foundation engagement now opens with a Profound-powered baseline audit: where your brand stands in AI answers before any strategy gets set, measured against citation share, share of voice, and sentiment.
The Bitly engagement is the proof of work. Over 12 months, Foundation turned a dead 38-member subreddit into an owned content engine, eight threads from that subreddit are now cited directly in Google AI Overviews, four of them holding the number one position, and Reddit referral sessions jumped 422%, from 178 to 930, over the year. Reddit itself recognized Bitly as an official success story on its business platform. The full case study lives at foundationinc.co/case-study/bitly.
There is a second layer of credibility here that is easy to miss. Since 2025, Profound has trusted Foundation to strengthen its own AI visibility, while Foundation has relied on Profound’s measurement for clients. The certifier was the client first. That is not a press release decoration; it is the kind of two-way relationship that usually only exists in the pitch deck.
What changed
The KPI. That is the whole earthquake in one word.
Most brands still run their social and community programs on referral traffic. Clicks in, conversions down the line. Foundation’s move with Bitly was to demote clicks and promote citation share: the percentage of AI answers in which the brand gets named, across the questions buyers actually ask. Measured in Profound, across 218 tracked prompts, Bitly now leads link shorteners at 11.7%.
Why does this matter? Because the buying conversation moved rooms. AI is now the first place many B2B buyers research vendors and build shortlists. And those answers are increasingly built on community content, led by Reddit. Foundation’s own April 2026 analysis of 57.2 million citations across five major AI platforms found Reddit was the largest external source cited for B2B SaaS brands, accounting for 20.8% of all external citations. On unbranded discovery queries, the queries where a buyer asks “what’s the best tool for X” without naming names, Reddit accounted for 30.9%. Nearly one in three.
So the discovery query that used to land on your SEO-optimized comparison page now lands on a thread where strangers argue. If your brand is not in that thread, you are not in the answer. The subreddit is not a traffic source. It is the reference library the machine reads.
This reframes a decade of community marketing. All those “join the conversation” decks treated Reddit like a place to be seen. Foundation treated it like a place to be cited. Different game, different scoreboard.
What works
The strategy was not “post more.” It was structural.
First, own the venue. Instead of chasing mentions in other people’s subreddits, Foundation rebuilt Bitly’s own subreddit from 38 members into a functioning content engine. Owned territory means the brand sets the questions, hosts the answers, and accumulates authority in one place the machines can find and trust. Eight threads cited in Google AI Overviews is the receipt.
Second, write for the reader that is not human. The content engine exists so that when a model assembles an answer about link shorteners, Bitly’s threads are the most quotable, most recent, most authoritative material in the room. This is SEO for an audience of machines that read everything and remember everything.
Third, measure the thing that changed. The Profound baseline audit means every engagement starts with a receipt of where the brand stood in AI answers, and progress is tracked against it with continuous monitoring. Citation share, share of voice, sentiment. Ross Simmonds, Foundation’s CEO, put the thesis plainly: “Buyers now ask AI before they ever visit a website, and those answers are increasingly shaped by community conversations. Profound shows brands where they stand today. Our job is to improve where they stand tomorrow.”
Fourth, the compounding effect. The 422% lift in Reddit referral sessions, 178 to 930, is almost a footnote in the release, and that is the point. Traffic became the byproduct. The machine answered with Bitly, people clicked through to verify, and the funnel filled itself. When Attentive’s September 30 survey of 3,054 U.S. adults found that 93% of AI-assisted shoppers seek information outside the chatbot before deciding, mostly reviews, prices, and product detail, that is the verification loop Bitly is now sitting on the good side of. What breaks or stays fenced
Honest accounting, because the Vault does not do press release cosplay.
This is one client, one category, one 218-prompt set. Link shorteners are a small, nameable set of brands with clear buyer questions. Whether citation share scales as a KPI for a messy enterprise category with forty competitors and vague buyer intent is an open question. Do not copy the scoreboard without copying the prompt list.
Citation share is also a rented metric. It depends on Profound’s prompt set, Profound’s models, Profound’s sampling. The release is admirably specific about the measurement, 218 prompts, five platforms, April 2026 baseline analysis, and specificity is the best defense against bullshit. But whoever writes the prompt list writes the truth. Write your buyers’ questions yourself before an agency writes them for you.
Reddit is still Reddit. Community content engines live and die by community trust, and Reddit has a famously sensitive nose for corporate gardening. The fact that Reddit recognized Bitly as an official success story suggests the program played it straight, but any brand tempted to replicate this with a thin astroturf job should expect the immune system to kick in fast.
And the category risk: if AI citation share becomes the KPI everyone chases, every subreddit in every B2B category becomes a battleground, and the cost of being citable rises like the cost of being rankable did. Early movers get the cheap acres. Latecomers get the bidding war.
Who it is for
If your buyers ask AI for recommendations before they ever touch your site, this is your playbook. B2B SaaS teams in categories where Reddit threads already outrank your comparison pages. Any brand watching its SEO dashboards hold steady while pipeline quietly softens, because the conversation moved to a room you are not in.
If your customers buy on relationships, referrals, and RFPs, you can keep your KPI. But audit the assumption. Check whether your best accounts ran their vendor shortlist through a chatbot first. You might be surprised who is asking the machine about you.
What to do this week
- Ask AI what it says about you. Run ten questions your buyers actually ask through ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Note who gets named, who gets skipped, and what sources get cited. That is your baseline, free, today.
- Check your Reddit exposure. Search Reddit for your category’s discovery queries and count how often your brand appears versus competitors. If the answer is never, you just found next quarter’s project.
- Rewrite one prompt list. Write the twenty questions your buyers ask, in their words, not your keyword planner’s words. This list is the foundation of every AI visibility program. Own it before an agency does.
- Stop reporting only referral traffic from community. Add citation presence to the dashboard: does the brand appear in AI answers for your top buyer questions, and is the trend moving. The click was the old scoreboard.
The subreddit is not the funnel. It never was. It is the library, the testimony, the thing the machine reads before it speaks. Bitly just proved that the brand which curates the library writes the answer.
